How to tell pure honey from fake honey: the truth about home tests
· 1 min read
A question we hear a lot: “How can I tell if honey is pure?” There is plenty of advice online, but not all of it is right. In this article we will be honest with you.
Home tests: not final proof
The glass of water, the flame, the paper or the finger test… These only give an idea of the honey’s texture and moisture. Honey mixed with sugar or syrup can pass many of them, and pure honey that is a little moist can fail. So do not rely on them alone.
Crystallisation: a good sign, not a flaw
Many people think honey that crystallises contains sugar. In fact, crystallisation is natural: it happens with cold and time and depends on the type. Orange blossom honey crystallises quickly, while sidr honey stays liquid longer.
What really matters
Laboratory analysis: the only reliable way to know if honey has been mixed.
Trust in the source: buy from people you know, who show their faces and stand behind their products.
A reasonable price: pure honey is never very cheap. If a kilo of thyme honey costs far below the market price, ask questions.
A clear label: type, weight and the seller’s contact details.
