Traditional argan oil making: from cracking the nuts to golden oil
· 1 min read
Beldi argan oil is more than an oil: it is days of work that countryside women do by hand, as they learned from their grandmothers. In this video we show you every step, from cracking the nuts to the golden oil.
The steps of making argan oil
1. Cracking (tfeqqis)
Once the outer flesh of the fruit is removed, a very hard nut remains. The women crack it one by one between two stones to take out the small kernels. This is the longest step and takes patience and skill.
2. Roasting over the fire
The kernels are roasted in a clay dish over a wood fire, stirred constantly. This step gives culinary argan oil its roasted aroma. Cosmetic oil is made without roasting. Culinary vs cosmetic argan oil.
3. Grinding with the stone mill
The roasted kernels are ground in the traditional stone mill into a thick brown paste.
4. Kneading
The paste is kneaded by hand with a little lukewarm water; slowly the oil comes out and gathers. It is then filtered and left to rest so the sediment settles. The remaining cake is given to the animals in the countryside.
Why is beldi argan oil expensive?
A single litre made the traditional way takes a large amount of fruit and days of work. That is why very cheap argan oil should make you suspicious.
